George and (nearly) Victoria

This rather restrained statue of George IV stands in front of the Brighton Pavilion; his seaside pleasure-palace. The Pavilion remained in royal hands until the reign of Victoria, who detested the place and, after stripping it of everything of value including the wallpaper, sold it to Brighton Council. It’s now a museum run by the Council, stocked with much of the original furniture - on loan from Elizabeth II.

I find it amusing that the main statue of Victoria was erected where it was. You can see the base of its plinth in the foreground here. There she stands, forced to look in perpetuity at not only the palace she ransacked, but the man who originally commissioned it to look as it does. No wonder she looks so miserable.
