A fair bit of Googling later and I discover these things are called ‘Sea Wash Balls’, so called because if you rub them with water they make lather and sailors used them to wash with at sea. Odd. Anyway, they’re the cases of eggs laid by whelks, and the first one out gets to eat all the others.
